Art Eggleton
Distinguished Politician and Public Servant, Community Leader, Retired Senator, Former Mayor and Federal Cabinet Minister
Art Eggleton has been one of Canada’s most distinguished, experienced and accomplished political figures for over 45 years. From 1973 to 1991 he held the most important offices on Toronto City Council and the Metropolitan Toronto Council, including those of City Budget Chief, and Mayor of Toronto, having been the longest serving Mayor in the City’s history. He also served on the Metropolitan Toronto Police Commission, the Board of the Canadian National Exhibition, and numerous committees and task forces dealing with community issues.
Following his time in municipal politics, he went on to serve 11 years in the Parliament of Canada as the member for York Centre from 1993 to 2004. During that period, Mr. Eggleton served as President of the Treasury Board & Minister Responsible for Infrastructure, Minister for International Trade, Minister of National Defence, and Vice-Chairman of Cabinet Committee on Economic Policy. In his final 2 years in the House of Commons (2002-2004), he served as Chair of the Greater Toronto Area Liberal Caucus, and as a member of the House Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
In 2005, Mr. Eggleton was appointed to the Senate of Canada where he served until 2018, having reached the mandatory retirement age of 75. Throughout his tenure he served as either Chair or Deputy Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science, and Technology where he focused his work on social justice and health care reform issues. In 2012, he founded and convened the All-Party Anti-Poverty Caucus, a group consisting of Members of Parliament and Senators from all political parties.
In 2015 he was appointed by the Mayor of Toronto to be Chair of the Mayor’s Task force on Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) for which a report was issued the following year and is now part of reforms being implemented.
He is on the Board of Trustees for Blue Pier Retirement Plans, on the Board of Directors for the Kiwanis Club of Toronto Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club – Toronto Kiwanis. He is also a Vice-President of Liberal International, an organization that works to advance liberal values and liberal democracy in the world, and he serves as President of its Canadian group.
He is the recipient of numerous awards and honours in recognition of his extraordinary public service to Toronto and to Canada.
